which type of gold coins are the better investment
It looks like buyers get more gold for their money investing in American Eagle bullion, South African Krugerands, etc. than they get with U.S. gold coins. So, as a newbie, my question is which is the better investment in terms of projected return? Thanks.

Re: which type of gold coins are the better investment
If you want to get gold for gold's sake, stay as far away as you can from ANY gold coin that has numismatic value. PERIOD! There are tens and tens and tens of millions of old U.S. gold coins out there...European banks are full of them. None were melted between the 1933 turn-in and 1974 when the U.S. government stopped giving them out to foreign banks in trade for the old gold certificates. Don't listen to dealers stories about them not being confiscatable, etc. It's all bull. Dealers push them because dealers make far more profit selling an old U.S. gold coin then they do bullion coins....again PERIOD.
1 oz. Krugerrands trade at lower premiums then Eagles or Maple Leafs because there are comparatively sooooooooo many of them out there. Diversify............Rands, Eagles, and Maple Leafs if you want some .9999 gold. |

Several have made comments to the effect of being ripped off in such deals. Quote:
since you're in the US, I suggest you may wish to consider Gold Eagles as a primary choice. I have heard of counterfeits of K-rands. Can't remember hearing of Counterfeit Gold Eagles - but wouldn't surprise me if there had been. But really, any of the common bullion coins are fine. Just get what you like and will enjoy - Like Goldminer said - get some different ones - Check them with a scale and calipers for correct weight and size if you don't buy from a dealer. |
Re: which type of gold coins are the better investment
I was looking for simular info 8 years ago - Re: numismatic or bullion investment. As the result of "trusting" a reputable coin dealer I chose numismatic.
At this time (8 years later), I am getting close to my original investment but as a Canadian, my dollar seems to have cost me another 30 % . I guess you know what my choice would have been if I could do it all over again. I am just wonder at what time I should get out of numismatic ? I was thinking when gold reaches $1000, I may break even. Btw , gold bullion was $289 when I chose numismatic. |

Yours is a common story, though the "screwee's" don't usually come forward to tell it. I got burned many years ago buying Morgan silver dollars instead of silver bullion when I first started.....same bullshit from a coin dealer. Live and learn. There is a place for numismatics IF you really know the market, or if you just flat like the piece. I have a Spanish slilver "piece of eight" off a recovered galleon that silver will have to go to about 500/oz to ever 'break even' bullionwise......but I liked the coin and knew going in I'd probably never sell it.....but I wouldn't make it a habit of buying them....ahahahahahaa Bullion coin is the best way to go IMHO. |
Re: which type of gold coins are the better investment
I believe the last big run up in PMs you would have done lots and lots better if you knew what you were doing with high priced numismatics. But you have to know what you are doing. If I had lots of money I would buy some. I may yet even with out a lot of money. I at this time I'm in a keep it stupid simple mode. Bullion bullion bullion.
